A Late Night Thought on Oppression

To one extent or another, all hierarchical societies oppress their members.  That’s to say, some degree of oppression has so far proved necessary to create and maintain every hierarchical society we know of.  Most of us deal with the fact by largely ignoring it.  Then again, some of us flat out deny it.  But no one escapes it.  Civilization is a devil’s bargain.

  1. Sometimes I think a whole passel of the laws passed in any given society have no other real purpose than to tell the not-powerful that the powerful can tell them what to do. I guess that would be called oppression.
