  1. There are five species of great apes; four are African and one (orangutans) is Asian. The four species of African great apes are gorillas, chimpanzees, bonobos, and us.


  2. Not sure when Dawkins made that statement, but I believe in recent years it was determined that humans did not evolve from apes, rather both species evolved from a common ancestor.

    Regardless, behaviorally we are very similar.
    I recall a book by Desmond Morris entitled “the naked ape” that detailed the behavioral similarities between humans and apes. As I recall, each chapter explored the similarities for a particular topic (socialization, cognitive processes, sexual habits etc).


  3. I think if we stopped to understand and accept the evolution of our ape behavior, we could better figure out how to control ourselves as a species.
