The Rot in Murdoch’s Empire?

Throughout the phone-tapping controversy in the UK, News Corp’s management have sought to portray this behaviour as isolated and completely out of step with its professed ethics as a news organisation. But there is enough evidence from those who have worked inside the Murdoch empire that this sort of behaviour was a natural expression  of the “whatever it takes” ethos that drives its journalism – not just in the UK but around the world.

Mr. Denmore

So just how extensive is the rot in Rupert Murdoch’s Empire?  Is there everywhere an abuse of power and wealth, a disregard for people and ethical standards?  Or was the UK incident isolated, as Murdoch’s people suggest?

  1. Please! I’m trying desperately not to gloat, not to experience deliciously tingling waves of schadenfreude as poor little Rupert is hung out to dry.

And the scandal even extends to the head of Dow Jones, see the Financial Times:

“Les Hinton, chief executive of Dow Jones, is being blamed by people close to News Corp, for failing to get to grips with the News of the World phone hacking scandal when he was in charge of Rupert Murdoch’s UK newspaper group.

“Mr Hinton, a loyal Murdoch employee for 52 years who had been expected to retire next year, could become the most senior casualty of the crisis, his friends fear, deflecting blame from James Murdoch, who runs News Corp’s European operations, and Rebekah Brooks, chief executive of News International, which publishes Mr Murdoch’s UK papers.”

The rats are frantically running around trying to pin the blame on someone else.

  2. I try never to underestimate the ability of our politicians to ignore both public sentiment and common sense, particularly when it comes to dealing with the right-wing press. I doubt there will be any repercussions over this in America, and unless the British manage to throw both Murdochs in jail, the loss of that market alone isn’t going to kill off NewsCorp.
