I love H.L. Mencken!!! He was probably one of the wisest and wittiest men of the 20th Century. My favorite is “It is a sin to believe evil of others, but it is seldom a mistake.” I think we could apply this to the Tea Party who hide behind God while invoking His name and committing greed — one of the Seven Deadly Sins.

I don’t begin to understand the Tea Party. Who are those people, anyway? And how can they be so naive?

I don’t live in the States, but if I did, I’d have that quote tattooed on some prominent part of my body.

For years I have loved this quote from Mencken:
“If I had my way no man guilty of golf would be eligible to any office of trust or profit under the United States…”
and now, having googled it to make sure I got the wording right, I see (can this be true?) that his thought did not end there:
“…and all female athletes would be shipped to the white-slave corrals of the Argentine.”
Hahahahahahaha! Joke’s on me. Again.

I guess Mencken wasn’t the world’s greatest realist when it came to women.

I volunteer to give him a sucker-punch that he will feel right down through the hereafter.

And by the way I am fifty-fucking-six but you really do not want to meet me in a dark alley.

That wouldn’t be such a bad thing to watch.

Nothing was sacred to Mencken’s razor-sharp pen! He was a definite misogynist. As to the first quote — I might just send it to John Boehner!!!!!
