Paul’s Daily Three for September 23, 2018

What was your favorite children’s story growing up?

Are you mostly a poor, middling, or excellent cook?  How do you compare to your parents or grandparents?

If you could had to be one or the other, would you be a police officer or a fire fighter?

  1. I don’t have a favorite story growing up but my favorite poem growing up & even now is Mother to Son by Langston Hughes. I’m a middling cook, old souls & I tend to connect more. I’d be a firefighter before I’d be a police officer.

  2. 1) Anything that rhymed.
    2) I am an excellent cook, though there are gaps in my skill set. For instance, I don’t really know what to do with large hunks of meat (other than whole chickens or something fowl like that). As regards to my parents & grandparents: they taught me my skills and gave me my recipes, so I am a cooking clone of them.
    3) I think I would choose fire fighter. Just thinking of the people I would have to handle as a police officer makes me cringe. Fire is just fire.

  3. What was your favorite children’s story growing up? I had several over the years, as I should think is not uncommon. “I Love You Forever” by Robert Munsch when I was very little. “Pagoo” (it’s about a hermit crab who has adventures) and the novelization of “Peter Pan” when I got older.

I am an excellent cook, as a general rule, though everyone has their flubbing moments! My grandmothers have both given me the thumbs up in the past, an honor reserved for fairly few of the grandkids. It is also true that neither of them truly enjoyed cooking though; social obligation kept their kitchens humming, but they weren’t in it for enjoyment. My mother really does like cooking, and I would say we are both pretty good at it but have very different tastes, to the extent that direct comparison is difficult. My dad only cooks two things: hamburgers and meatloaf. The meatloaf is the same as the hamburger, only mashed up in a bowl with considerably more ketchup. So I am pretty confident on that one.

Fire fighter. I’d much rather save lives than end them, and while both careers lend opportunities for the former, only one requires the latter.

  4. I think it would Beauty and the Beast. As a kid was enamoured by the idea of the beast turning into a prince.

Is it alright to gloat? My husband believes I am an excellent cook. Both sets of my grandparents were gone before I was born. My father could rustle up burnt offerings and my mom says I am better than her….so there!

    Firefighter.
