A Flock of Sparrows for Majel: We Love to Forbid Love

A Flock of Sparrows for Majel

(About a 4 minute read)

I like to think twelve things redeem humanity
Twelve things make up for all our foolishness and our crimes.
Twelve things make our lives worth living in the balance,
Worth living in the balance.

But I know there are only six.
I would like to think there are twelve things,
But I know there are only six.
And perhaps the best of them is love.
And perhaps the best of them is love.

Yet, it seems every place I’ve learned of,
Every land or people I’ve been told of
Fucks with love.

Every land or people forbids
One or another kind of love.
Forbids one or another kind of love.
Fucks, fucks with love.

Well, damn!
What’s up with that?

I thought once it was the simple fact
Apes are always messing with things.
Apes are always, always messing with things.

But in my recent years I believe
A somewhat different truth than that.
A somewhat different truth than that.

I’d just love to tell you all about it
(With a shameless pun included at no extra cost).

When you look into it, when you sniff it out,
I believe you will see:
We proud apes love to build high walls.
We love to guard our hierarchies and our ranks.
We love to defend our money and our gold.
We love to build societies with thick walls
Dividing the few who eat the cake,
From the many who eat the crumbs.

Well, damn!
But what’s that got to do with love?

So far as I can see, love just happens to be
About the most subversive thing there is.
About the most subversive thing there is.
About the most subversive thing there is.

Love finds ways around all walls.

It climbs over, it tunnels under,
It out flanks them on the right,
It out flanks them on he left.

It grabs them by the spirit.
It grabs them by the heart.
It grabs them by the balls.
It grabs them by the pussy.
It even has been known
To now and then grab a few minds
(You have such a beautiful mind, my dear.
May I fuck it, please?).

Love finds ways around all walls.

Some decent folks say water is
The most subversive thing of all.

Water flows over boulders,
It flows beneath them too,
It flows to the sides,
It subverts every stone.

But love puts water to shame.
Love puts water to shame.

Love not only flows over
And under and around,
But love can grab you,
It can grab you
It can wrestle your ego,
It can wrestle your very self
It can wrestle them to the ground.

Love can wrestle anyone
To the ground.
For love is the master
Of at least five holds.

Love is the master
Of at least five holds.

Rich will fall for poor,
And poor will fall for rich.
(The shock! The shock! The shock!)

Black will fall for white,
And white will fall for black.
(OMG! OMG! OMG!)

Man will fall for woman,
And woman will fall for man.
(Well that’s ok. We can all deal with that)

Man will fall for man,
And woman will fall for woman.
(JESUS FUCKING CHRIST! THAT’S UNGODLY!
But I just got to take a peek.
I just got to take a peek.
You know. For reconnaissance.)

Youth with fall for age,
And age will fall for youth.
(Dirty old men! Dirty old cougars!
It can’t be true love. It just can’t.)

French will fall for German,
And German will fall for French.
(Man the borders!
Man the trenches!
Man the ramparts strong!)

Brahmin will fall for untouchable,
And untouchable will fall for Brahmin.
(Let’s Riot! Riot! Riot!
And then Riot! Riot! Riot! some more!)

Christian will fall for Muslim,
And Muslim will fall for Christian.
(Y’all are going to hell.
All of you off to Hell!
Off to hell right now!)

Love can subvert every wall.

Every land or people forbids
One or another kind of love.
Forbids one or another kind of love.

We proud apes love to build high walls.
We love to guard our hierarchies and our ranks.
We love to defend our money and our gold.
We love to build societies with thick walls
Dividing the few who eat the cake,
From the many who eat the crumbs.

Some folks love to forbid love.
Some folks love to forbid love.

Some folks love their money more.
Some folks love their gold more.
