A Flock of Sparrows for Majel: The Whole, Cold World is Starving

A Flock of Sparrows for Majel

(About a 2 minute read)

“Have you ever been in love? Horrible isn’t it? It makes you so vulnerable. It opens your chest and it opens up your heart and it means that someone can get inside you and mess you up. You build up all these defenses, you build up a whole suit of armor, so that nothing can hurt you….” — Neil Gaiman

Have you noticed how some people who say
The whole, cold world starves them of love
Only want safely and security?

In a way they have it right,
The cold world has starved them.
Starved them by lying they can have both
Safety and security,
And love.

The world tells people what makes people
Feel good.
The world wants to sell things.

Books and movies, T-shirts and friendships,
Audiences and followers, religions and lovers.

The world tells people what makes people
Feel good.
The world tells people what makes people
Buy.

To the world, you are a fish.
It baits its hooks with whatever you buy.
It even baits them with the truth.
The world even baits its hooks with the truth.

“No one loves me, I am so alone.”
It’s hard to hear words when they are spoken
Through 26 masks at once,
But you hear the same words so often,
You can guess what the muffled sounds mean anyway.

“I am starving for love. But I want to be safe.
Is it too much to ask you look at my masks
While yet loving me? I can’t see why not.
It’s what I’ve been taught by the TV.”

A man says, “I love flowers”, so he plucks them.
A woman says, “I love men”, so she cages them.
It’s easier to defend masks
Against the wounded and the dead.

“My friends all say I am a mystery to them.”
To love me is to love a mystery. Someday,
If you are good, true, and kind,
I will reveal my shoe size.”
She says it with mysterious pride.

A decade goes by, you still wait for her size.

But the sex is good.  So you stay.

The world, the whole world can see
A man’s or woman’s soul with the right glance,
Yet we will believe we are a mystery
If no one knows our pasts.

Have you noticed how some people who say
The whole, cold world starves them of love
Only want sympathy
For they think sympathy is love?

You see, sympathy is about all
You can feel through a mask.
