Why Some Talk Show Hosts Talk Over Their Guests?

The thought occurs to me this morning that perhaps the reason some talk show hosts talk over their guests is because they could not win a dispute in a fair fight.  That is, they could not win if their guest’s opinions could be heard and reflected upon.  But I really don’t know.  I don’t watch a lot of talk shows. Thoughts?

  1. They listen to respond, not to learn. They are dishonest only in an interview is supposed to be to learn, not to humiliate. They act in a manner repulsive if done to the littlest of our talking humans…as such…an elementary betrayal.

  2. Admittedly, I’m a talk show junkie (shows of a political nature, not the vapid celebrity hosted shows). In my observation the hosts routinely restrain themselves from interrupting the guest, although it looks like the host must try very hard at times. More often I have witnessed the host phrase their questions to the guest in a very loaded manner, a manner that unabashedly sets up what the host WANTS the guest to answer.

    1. Those are some fascinating insights, Carla! I’m especially interested to learn how hosts set up their guests. That’s something I’ll look for now.

I’m most likely using the term “talk show host” in a misleading way. I had in mind folks like Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, but you have reminded me that they are not all there is to the talk show universe. They sure are loud, though!. I can seldom finish an entire video of one of those guys whenever I’m foolish enough to click on one on YouTube.
